Lessons learned from hospital-based employment launches?

Hospitals & health systems are increasingly considering employment of their anesthesia and radiology physicians and APPs.  Having performed and operated more than 35 transitions over the past 5 years, challenges in tailoring what these hospital-based service lines need for their success falls in how well these support departments are aligned:

  1. Managed Care – should you start a unique TIN, negotiation of commercially-reasonable rates; 

 

  1. Human Resources – adopting 8+ weeks of PTO without upsetting other employed physicians and APPs; 

 

  1. Legal – navigating FMV support for sign-on’s, relocation support, medical directorships, and whether to employ restrictive covenants;

 

  1. Revenue Cycle – can you billing application bill for how the hospital-based practices bill (e.g., anesthesia base/time units) or should you outsource with a 3rd party billing vendor; 

 

  1. Recruiting – ensuring the sourcer/recruiter is able to effectively “sell” the employment model opportunity to provider candidates who have multiple offers for their services.
